Meditate on something negative and you'll see how slowly, very slowly, surprise overwhelms you, sadness turns to joy, anger turns to compassion, greed turns to detachment, and so on. It is the science of inner alchemy: how to transform the negative into the positive, how to transform base metal into gold. But remember, never start with the positive because you know nothing about the positive. And that is precisely what many people are teaching around the world—"positive thinkers," they call them. They know nothing about inner alchemy. Don't start with gold, because if you already have gold, what will be the starting point? You will have no need for alchemy. You must start with the base metal; the base metal must be transformed into gold. And the base metal is what you have, what you are. What you are is hell, which must be transformed into paradise. You have the poison, which must be transformed into nectar. Start with the negative. All the Buddhas have insisted: progress via the negative, because the negative brings the positive, and it brings it very easily. Don't pursue it or try to force it on yourself. If you start with the positive, as the so-called positive thinkers preach, you'll end up being a fraud. What are you going to do? Are you going to start with joy? You can start smiling, but that smile will be faint, only on your lips, not even on your skin. Start with the negative, and you will have no need to think about the positive. If you meditate on the negative, if you delve into it to its deepest root, suddenly there is an explosion, the negative vanishes, and the positive appears. In reality, it has always been there, hidden behind the negative. The negative was merely a refuge. The negative was necessary because you were not yet worthy enough; the negative was necessary so that you could become worthy of receiving the positive.
